10 Visual Trends for Summer 2019

As we get into the summer of 2019 we take a look at some of the image and book cover trends we’re seeing in the publishing world just now!

Small figures in empty backdrops…
This trend often creates a sense of an individual appearing adrift, humbled, or overwhelmed by a natural landscape. There is also a practical aspect of creating plenty of copy space!

Black & white with a splash of red…
It’s a simple but effective technique to create a dramatic pop of colour

Double exposures…
This is an enduringly popular technique and can create many different moods and styles, such as suggesting conflict within an individual, or a gap between appearance and reality

African-American women in illustration…
An eye-catching approach, often using vivid colours, making more diverse stories stand out from the crowd.

The 1920s…
We love the fashions and styles of the 1920s! We’re delighted to see more titles set in this period, and designers are using both vintage photography and period costume shoots!

Blue tones…
Cool blues and inky greys are being used to create winter scenes and chilly atmospheres.

Delicate florals…
We spotted this trend in our predictions for 2019 and it’s still going strong!

Through the window…
Another long-established trend, especially in psychological thrillers, a view through a window can plant an idea of unseen observation and things not being quite what they seem!

Cracked textures…
Bold incorporation of cracks can send a powerful visual message of things decaying or falling apart.

Opposites…
We’ve seen some really creative use of opposites and mirror images, sometimes incorporating opposing colours and text styles. A clear line sometimes heightens the sense of contrast.

Remember – if you’re creating photography or illustrations for the book publishing market it’s vital to be aware of trends and themes. We hope this inspires some exciting new submissions!
