Netflix’s 2019 movie The Highwaymen re-tells the story of Bonnie & Clyde from the perspective of the law officers who hunted them down. The film makes a bold decision to barely depict the infamous couple. Nevertheless, the romance, glamour and brutality of the criminal underworld in our imaginations exerts a strong hold. 

The gangsters of the Prohibition and Depression-era USA present a striking visual identity, with sharp suits and tommy-guns, and more recently the success of Peaky Blinders in the UK has added the flat cap to the mobster’s wardrobe of choice.
